Common Scar Revision Procedures

Short for trichloroacetic acid chemical reconstitution of skin scars, TCA CROSS works by stimulating collagen production within the scar to increase its height. It involves using a fine blunt end-point instrument to apply TCA to the acne scars.

Upon application, frosting will start to appear and last up to 12 hours. The affected area will develop crusts that will fall off on their own after a week, signalling a successful healing process. It takes 2-3 sessions combined with fractional resurfacing laser treatment to produce the best results.

Subcision is a simple and safe procedure used to treat cutaneous scars that developed on patients who had undergone surgery or burns. It is performed using a special hypodermic needle inserted on the skin surface through a puncture.

The fibres connecting the scar to the underlying tissue will loosen and break in this process. In addition to lifting depressed scars, subcision can trigger collagen release, which aids in diminishing the scar’s overall appearance.

Intralesional Steroid Injection

This safe procedure is considered the gold standard in treating keloid and hypertrophic scars without surgery. Causing only minimal pain, the anti-inflammatory steroid injections can also reduce pain and itchiness associated with keloid scars.

While removing the scars completely is impossible, this treatment method can flatten them and make them less noticeable. Most patients need a few injections every 4-5 weeks to see a significant difference.

Skin Resurfacing Scar Laser

This powerful scar removal technique directs concentrated light beams through short pulses at the affected area. The fractional laser causes micro laser wounds in the treated skin region, which will heal to form a new layer of smooth, firm skin.

Patients will experience significant improvement in skin texture, tone, and tightened skin due to the thermal and ablation effect of the laser. Also known as lasabrasion, laser peel, or laser vaporisation, this scar removal treatment is ideal for treating wavelike or rolling scars.

Common Types of Scars

Edit Content

A result of deep inflammation and cyst formation, acne scars can be severe and require treatment. Acne scars often appear as depressions that are shallow, deep, or even wavelike in appearance.

Keloid scars tend to be thick and appear as red lumps on various parts of the body. While they are neither cancerous nor contagious, these itchy scars can be rather painful in severe cases.

Similar to keloid scars, hypertrophic scars are also raised and reddish in colour. However, they tend to stay within the wounded area and are easier to treat compared to keloids.

Contracture scars are a result of burning and loss of skin. As part of the healing process, the scar pulls the edges of the skin and causes it to tighten. Movement impairment is common and may even affect muscles and nerves if the contracture scar is deep.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

It is not possible to remove scars permanently. The reason is that new skin cells form when cell division happens at the base of our skin’s outer layer.

Since cell DNA does not change, the dividing cells below will always transmit the same genetic material from one cell generation to the next. That means if you have a wound that heals into a scar, you will always generate cells with scar tissue in your DNA.

However, scars can fade after several sessions of clinically-proven scar therapy and treatments.

Patients who have undergone laser scar removal treatments compare the feeling to being shot by a rubber band. Their skin also adapts to the minimal pain quickly, and it is only mildly uncomfortable at most.

It might be comforting for patients to know that doctors do apply topical anaesthetic onto the area so your skin will be numb before the laser scar removal treatment.

Commonly used for skin rejuvenation purposes, laser treatment is a popular remedy for various skin issues such as aged spots, melasma, dermal pigmentation and freckles.

Scar removal treatments in Malaysia usually range from RM300 to about RM1,500, depending on the size of the scar and the type of treatment.

The extent of the treatment also factors into the total cost as some patients would need more sessions to produce the desired result.
